John Green: Mr. Sasquatch 


John Willison Green (1927–2016) was one of the most influential and respected Bigfoot (Sasquatch) researchers in history. A Canadian journalist, author, and civic leader, Green helped bring credibility and serious investigation to a subject that had long been dismissed as folklore.


Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Green earned a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University at just 20 years old. He went on to work for several newspapers before purchasing and operating the Agassiz-Harrison Advance, a community newspaper in rural British Columbia. He was also deeply involved in public service, serving as Mayor of Harrison Hot Springs during the 1960s.





Green became interested in Sasquatch reports in 1957, when large footprints were discovered near Bluff Creek, California. Unlike many who treated the subject lightly, he approached it as a journalist and investigator. Over decades of work, he personally interviewed hundreds of eyewitnesses and compiled thousands of sighting and track reports from across North America, creating one of the most extensive Sasquatch databases ever assembled.


He authored several foundational books that remain essential reading in Bigfoot research, including On the Track of the Sasquatch (1968), The Sasquatch File (1973), and Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us (1978). His writing was known for being cautious, evidence-focused, and respectful of eyewitnesses, which earned him wide admiration in the field.


Often referred to as “Mr. Sasquatch,” John Green was one of the original giants of Sasquatch research and a member of the famous “Four Horsemen of Sasquatchery.” His work laid the groundwork for modern Bigfoot investigation and continues to influence researchers, authors, and storytellers today.


Green passed away in 2016 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of careful documentation, honest inquiry, and a lifelong commitment to understanding one of North America’s greatest mysteries.
